Double Tap: RACE Approved CPR and Triage Training
Papaya Veterinary Care recently hosted a comprehensive Veterinary CPR and Triage Training, tailored specifically for veterinary technicians and approved by RACE (Registry of Approved Continuing Education). This hands-on, skill-building session was led by our esteemed Executive Medical Director, Dr. Mirielle Boisse, DVM, who brought her years of experience in emergency and critical care to deliver an insightful and engaging workshop.
The Importance of CPR and Triage Training
For veterinary technicians, mastering CPR and triage is vital to providing lifesaving care in emergency situations. In a fast-paced veterinary environment, emergencies can happen at any moment, and technicians are often the first to respond. The training not only equips technicians with the knowledge of how to quickly assess and prioritize patient needs but also helps them refine their skills in triaging critical patients.
Dr. Boisse emphasized the importance of preparedness in these moments. “In emergency medicine, every second counts. Being able to recognize the signs of distress early and acting quickly can make all the difference,” she explained during the session. Dr. Boisse’s passion for veterinary medicine was clear as she guided participants through the essentials of emergency response, offering practical tips from her years in the field.
Hands-on Learning and Practical Applications
The course kicked off with an in-depth review of triage principles. Dr. Boisse walked participants through different case scenarios, illustrating how to assess and categorize patients based on the severity of their conditions. From prioritizing life-threatening conditions to identifying patients who need stabilization, the triage segment prepared technicians for the real-world chaos that can arise in emergency situations.
Following the triage instruction, the group transitioned into CPR training. Dr. Boisse’s demonstration included the updated 2024 RECOVER guidelines (Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation), which are recognized as the gold standard for performing CPR on animals. She broke down each stage of resuscitation, from chest compressions to ventilation and drug administration, allowing participants to practice on canine and feline mannequins to perfect their technique.
Dr. Boisse also highlighted common mistakes that occur during CPR, helping technicians learn how to avoid pitfalls and improve the process of running a code. “Our goal is to give every animal the best shot at survival, and that starts with getting CPR right,” she noted.
Team Coordination in Crisis
A critical aspect of emergency response is effective teamwork. Veterinary technicians often work alongside veterinarians, assistants, and other staff in high-stress environments where clear communication and quick action are key. During the training, participants practiced not only technical CPR skills but also how to communicate clearly with their team and the distressed client in real-time.
Dr. Boisse simulated real-world scenarios to demonstrate how effective coordination could be the difference between a successful effort and poorly unorganized one. “In emergencies, it’s not just about what one person does—it’s about how the team functions as a whole,” she said. “Everyone has to know their role and communicate clearly to provide the best care possible.”
RACE-Approved and Highly Respected
As a RACE-approved training, this session provided continuing education credits for licensed veterinary technicians, ensuring that they meet the rigorous standards of professional development in the field. The course was structured to not only enhance technicians’ skills but also to maintain industry compliance and keep them up-to-date with the latest advancements in veterinary emergency care.
Papaya Veterinary Care is committed to fostering a culture of continual learning and improvement, which is why we were thrilled to offer this high-quality training to our team. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting how much more confident they felt in handling emergencies after the session.
Looking Ahead
Papaya Veterinary Care plans to continue offering essential skills training like this to ensure veterinary industry staff remain at the forefront of veterinary care. “This training is just the beginning,” said Dr. Boisse. “We are committed to providing our community with the resources and knowledge they need to provide top-tier care to every patient.
